Today I heard that quote while listening to an audio book while driving on my way to work. I now drive approximately 45 minutes to get to work each day when I used to drive 20 minutes. The goal is different now. The immediate goal is to start a business that will allow me to achieve a bigger life goal. I never dreamed of starting my own business with anyone, I always felt it was better and easier to go work at a company with a pre-existing brand rather than try and create one from scratch. And that worked for quite some time, 6 years to be exact. 6 years of working for/with a not for profit organization that was among the top 5 in brand recognition amongst all other not for profits.
But a brand is more than a catchy logo and good marketing. A brand is built because of what it stands for. When you have a good idea and it's something other people can get behind and support, that's the stuff a good brand is built around. I believe in the work I have spent my entire career working for. I also know that the things that make me happy these days are changing and I want to continue to pursue the things that make me happy on a daily basis.
So even though driving 20 minutes to work was easier, I'll be driving 45 minutes any day it means I'm working towards my dreams. Too many people sacrifice the long term goals because of the short term. If I didn't take a chance and take a risk, I'd merely have the happiness associated with an extra 25 minutes to sleep in. I'll take pursuing my dreams over 25 minutes of sleep any day. Having hope and building my dream make me happy today.
